Project Description

Located in Singapore, this distinctive sculpture gallery is located amongst some of Singapores most renowned and recognisable buildings. This large scale gallery offers impressive walls and a floor plan unlike most. Due to its uninterrupted steel sheet facade, Artitect has no windows in order for it to appear sleek, minimal and subdued. Most modern galleries built today follow a “white cube” approach, this approach aims to minimise visual distractions, by directing viewers toward a pure experience of the artwork, which often results in bare spaces, white walls, and minimalist frames. The brief for this urban art gallery was to take a different approach altogether. I designed this gallery to aim to be a work of art in and of itself.

The perforated steel facade wraps around the entire gallery, with 3 narrow openings on alternating sides of the structure guiding people inside the gallery and paving the way to inquisitiveness. This gallery was designed using the Cubus approach, a method that helped me create its unique floor plan, this was achieved by completing numerous sketches inspired by symmetrical, asymmetrical, axial, rotational and revolving patterns. The goal of generating these sketches was to let the geometry speak for itself while also leaving my mind open to the many possibilities of what sketch had the potential to become an architectural framework.

There are numerous segments within the gallery that house a range of captivating sculptures on display, The geometry of the gallery creates three natural hallways that lead to each segment creating an exciting journey. Although there are no windows on the entire exterior face of the gallery this does not stop an abundance of natural light entering through each entrance, the communal courtyard and exposed top.

The gallery has a steel perforated sheet facade that wraps around the exterior of the building, creating a modern, captivating yet minimalistic appearance that works to reflect light whilst highlighting the architectural curves of the structure. The gallery certainly stands out amongst its surroundings due to this juxtaposition between reflective and solid materials.

The 3d modelling process was a rewarding experience from start to finish. Due to the gallerys complex shape and geometry, I was determined to ensure the structure created natural segments, hallways and paths that lead to a common communal area. Each segment of the gallery houses a variety of installations and sculptures. I made each segment of the gallery to have curved walls as I believe this guides viewers through each segment with ease. By implementing tall walls and an open structure it instills a willingness in people to explore, the scale of the gallery also allows for more natural light and ventilation to enter and pass through.
